Alder cones have disinfecting and antibacterial effect. They contain a high amount of tannins and lowers the pH slightly in the water.

They are also a high content of tannins, organic acids, colorants and substances as a red resin.

Alder cones is the fruit of alder trees (alder and Alnus incana).

Alder cones are rich in beneficial antimicrobial compounds that are released over several weeks when the cones are added to a tank.

Alder cones are often used by aquarists to create black water conditions, using large amounts gives the water a brown color. For shrimp they are used to lower the pH and reduce and prevent the level of bacteria and fungi. (Very useful during the warmer months).

Alder cones can be left in the tank for extended periods shrimps like to pick them when they break down. The anti-microbial and pH-lowering ability will last about 2 weeks.

It is recommended to use 3-4 pieces per 25 liters of water - change after 2-3 weeks.
